- You can use LearnML without an account. Your progress then stays in your browser.
- With an account, LearnML keeps your name, email and picture, your progress and notes, and how much of the AI tutor you use each day.
- No ads, no tracking, and nothing is sold. You can download or delete everything at any time.
Without an account
Lessons, labs, papers and the Playroom, including its game investigations, work without signing in. Your progress, notes, highlights and investigation answers are kept in your browser's storage on this device, not on LearnML's servers.
Like any website, LearnML's server sees your IP address when your browser asks it for something. It uses it to count requests, so that nobody can overload the site or run up the AI bill.
The server also keeps a short log of the requests it answers, through Cloudflare: when each one came, which page or address it was for, how the server answered, any error, and technical details such as your IP address and browser. The log never holds what you write: your questions, notes or feedback. It's used only to find and fix problems, and Cloudflare deletes it after 7 days.
With an account
You sign in with Google or GitHub. They tell LearnML your name, email address, profile picture and account ID (GitHub adds your username), and nothing else. There is no LearnML password. LearnML keeps:
- Your account: name, email, picture, which service you signed in with, and when you signed in. Sign-in logs, which include your IP address and browser, are kept for a short time to protect accounts from abuse.
- Your progress: finished lessons and scores, XP, streaks, and which papers you're reading.
- Your Playroom investigations: where you are in each investigation, the answers you checked (including the explanations you write and the rubric points you ticked), the experiment settings you ran, and the awards you earned. The server checks new awards against your saved answers before counting their XP. Answers you haven't checked yet stay in your browser only.
- Your paper notes: highlights, notes, AI answers you saved, paper chats, reading guides, quiz results and where you stopped reading.
- Your AI use: how many questions you asked each day and what they cost, for the daily allowance.
This is used only to give you your progress and notes on every device and to run the daily AI allowance.
Welcome questions
After your first sign-in, LearnML asks where you heard about it, how much machine learning you know, and why you want to learn it. Every question can be skipped. Your answers are kept with your account to understand how people find LearnML and what they need, and to suggest where to start. They come with your download and are deleted with your account.
Leaderboard
You're only on the leaderboard if you join it, with a nickname you choose. Everyone can then see that nickname and your points, and nothing else: not your name, email or picture. Your points are worked out from your saved progress. You can change the nickname or leave at any time, and leaving removes you from the board. The board's "practice rivals" are made up and labelled as such.
Feedback
Now and then LearnML asks how you're finding it. If you answer, it keeps your star rating, your comment if you write one, which part of the app you were on, and when. With an account, your feedback is linked to it, comes with your download, and is deleted with your account; without one, it isn't linked to you. Your browser remembers that it asked, so it won't ask again for a month.
The AI tutor
When you ask the AI tutor something, your question goes to Anthropic's Claude API, which writes the answer. With it go the text it's about (the lesson screen, or the paper and the passage you picked) and the earlier messages of that conversation. If you use Circle to ask, a small picture of the area you circled goes with it. Questions about a paper also say which LearnML units you've finished, so the answer fits what you know, and for a figure, Anthropic fetches its image from where the paper is published. Your name and email are not sent.
In the Playroom's game investigations, the tutor gets the chapter's lesson text and questions, and any text you select to ask about (or the sentence the Ask the tutor button highlights). It doesn't get your saved answers or explanations. The lessons themselves never need the AI: answers are marked by fixed rules, in your browser and on LearnML's server.
Cookies and storage
LearnML sets cookies only when you sign in. These are the session cookies that keep you signed in: they go only to LearnML's own server, page scripts can't read them, and signing out removes them. There are no advertising or tracking cookies.
Your browser's storage holds your progress and notes, so the app works offline and between visits. When you sign out, this device forgets them. They stay safe in your account.
Who else handles your data
- Supabase runs sign-in and stores accounts and saved data, in the United States (US East).
- Cloudflare hosts the site and runs its server, keeps copies of the papers the reader fetches, and stores the database backups.
- Anthropic writes the AI tutor's answers.
- Google or GitHub signs you in, whichever you choose.
- The page loads its fonts from Google Fonts and its math and PDF viewers from cdnjs (Cloudflare). Paper figures load from wherever the paper is published, such as arXiv. These services see your IP address, as with any web request.
Your choices
- Download your data: the account menu has "Download my data", a file with your account details, progress, notes and AI use.
- Delete your account: "Delete my account" in the account menu removes your account and everything saved with it, straight away. For safety, it asks you to have signed in within the last 10 minutes.
- Sign out: this device forgets your progress and notes. Your account keeps them.
A private backup copy of the database is saved every day in case something breaks. Daily copies are deleted after 30 days, and one copy a month is kept for 90 days. A deleted account can remain in a copy until that copy is deleted, so for at most 90 days.
